Mark Bloomfield, a long time assistant to Mother Teresa in India, died from injuries he succumbed in a fight outside a Wales pub. The attack occurred at the Full Moon Public House on High Street in Swansea on July 18. South Wales Police Swansea think the attack took place between 11:30 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. that evening. Bloomfield, 54, was immediately transported to the hospital with serious injuries, where he died on Saturday.

Colin Thomas Payne, 61, was arrested in connection with the assault and later charged with “causing grievous bodily harm. ” Two other unnamed suspects, a 21-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman, were arrested and questioned by police but later released.

Police have not identified what prompted the bar fight, leaving some to speculate that it was Bloomfield’s connection to Mother Teresa and alleged child trafficking investigations that may have been the cause.

NPR reported last July that the child care facilities run by the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic order founded by Mother Teresa, were investigated after a nun and a another worker were accused of baby trafficking.

Sister Koncilia, and staff member Anima Indwar, were arrested in connection with the trafficking. According to The Times of India, Indwar had confessed to selling four babies, all of whom were later recovered.

According to Catholic News Agency, a dozen pregnant women were living at the shelter at the time of the arrests. However, the Missionaries of Charity claimed that they never accepted money when babies in their care were given up for adoption. Police had discovered 140,000 rupees ($2,150; £1,625) at the center, which they took as evidence of child trafficking.

Mother Teresa was also criticized for her close relationship with Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier who ruled Haiti “with brutality and corruption for nearly 15 years before being overthrown in 1986.” She was criticized for taking donations from Duvalier. Mother Teresa also took donations from the disgraced British publisher Robert Maxwell, the father of Jeffrey Epstein‘s madame and pimp, Ghislaine Maxwell, and a scandal-plagued Charles Keating, the American banker who was convicted of fraud and racketeering.

Mother Teresa also had a hopeful relationship with Hillary Clinton. Clinton and Mother Teresa collaborated to open an orphanage and adoption center in Washington, D.C. in June of 1995. The center was housed in the Chevy Chase neighborhood. It was later discovered that the house was sold in 2002 and the adoption center had been quietly closed.

Indian lawmakers and other critics have called for Mother Teresa to be stripped of civilian honor, The Bharat Ratna or “Jewel of India,” over the baby-trafficking scandal.
