In a press conference held at the White House, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announce that the U.S. and Mexico have agreed to limit crossings over their shared border to essential travel only.

It was announced earlier this week that the United States and Canada had mutually agreed to close their shared border to all non-essential travel. The border closing into Canada takes effect tonight at midnight. The border into Mexico will effectively close on Saturday at midnight.

Both efforts are designed to help stop the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which originated in the Wuhan province of China. Globally nearly 250,000 people have tested positive for the virus and over 10,000 have died, overwhelming hospitals and healthcare workers in several countries.
