Israel and Bahrain were in discussions Friday night and are expected to strike a historic peace deal brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, following a similar deal between the United Arab Emirates and Israel.
President Trump announced that the Middle Eastern Gulf island nation is joining the United Arab Emirates in normalizing relations. Leaders of all three nations are expected to meet at the White House next week for an official signing ceremony.
Trump alluded to the possibility of a second country signing a treating with U.S. ally, Israel during a press statement on Thursday. He also confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Bahraini Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa had spoken by phone and both planned to be in Washington to join the signing ceremony.
The Trump administration has made middle east peace a priority as it continues to bring together long time foes of the region. Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was in Qatar holding talks with Taliban leaders in an attempt to bring peace to war-torn Afghanistan.
President Trump was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in brokering the historic deal between Israel and the UAE.
