Four days ago, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean and her 8 year-old son, Gideon disappeared while canoeing on the Chesapeake Bay. McKean is the daughter of Maryland’s former Lt Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy.
McKean, 40, and son were last spotted on Friday afternoon some 10 miles south of Annapolis near Herring Bay. Their canoe had been found overturned east of Rockhold Creek in Deale around 7 p.m. Friday.
According to a Facebook post by McKean’s husband, the mother and son were playing kickball on the shores of their property when the ball landed in the water. While trying to retrieve it in a canoe, they were swept into the open bay by the wind and current.
Authorities report that they recovered the body of McKean at 5:31 p.m. on Monday. According to the Baltimore Sun the body was found “submerged 25 feet and about 2½ miles from her mother’s residence in Shady Side in Anne Arundel County.” Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean, has not yet been found. Police plan to resume the search today.
Several family members were approached by members of the press, but declined comment.
