Kanye West, rapper-turned Christian artist announced his presidential campaign on Saturday in a tweet. As July 4 celebrations continued across the United States, he casually stated,
I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION.
He has missed the deadline to get on the ballot in several states, including Texas, New York and Illinois, so it’s unclear whether this is a real run for president or a ploy to get attention. He is still able to join the presidential race as an independent in other states.
Forbes notes that there is ‘currently one presidential candidate named Kanye West in the FEC database for the 2020 election year, a Green Party candidate named, umm …. “Kanye Deez Nutz West.” So, probably not the real Kanye.”
Elon Musk has lent his support to West when he tweeted:
You have my full support.
There is currently no other evidence that West actually plans to run. There has been no formal paperwork filed, nor have there been any petitions started in states that would require it for him to appear on the ballot.
Several people have suggested the theory that West is involved in a ploy to take away the black vote from Joe Biden. Others believe he would take votes away from Donald Trump.
