Mississippi Enacts Law Banning Abortion for Race, Sex, Genetic Reasons

Jackson, MS – Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has signed into law a bill that bans abortions for any reason related to sex, race or genetic conditions of the baby. This gives the state one of the toughest abortion law in place anywhere in the country.

Supporters of the law are elated that babies with conditions like Down Syndrome will no longer be terminated.

Women should not be pressured to have an abortion because their child is different: of a different ability, of a different race, of a different sex

Jameson Taylor, vice president for policy with the Mississippi Center for Public Policy, said.

Opponents said it would unconstitutionally interfere with private medical decisions in a state with one abortion clinic.
