2020 Democrat presidential hopeful Marianne Williamson is running on a platform of reparations for descendants of slaves, calling for payments of $200-$500B. Quite a few Democrats running for president agree with her, including Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y), Kamala Harris (Calif), Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Beto O’Rourke (Texas) and Cory Booker (N.J).
In a blog post entitled “Race and Repentance in America”, Williamson states ” the relationship between blacks and whites as groups in America is psychologically and emotionally dysfunctional.” She continues,
“we need to apologize, and we need to make genuine amends. America needs to pay long overdue war reparations, and until we do, we will not move forward in any meaningful way. America needs more than forgiveness; we need genuine repentance, and restitution for our national sins. “
Williamson further explains her stance on the subject in this campaign video:
As a form reparations, Williamson suggested creating a special council and allocating $100 billion that would be spent on programs to benefit African-American ancestors of slaves. She has no specifics plan for where these funds will come from.
Williamson has hit the 65,000-donor threshold set by the Democratic National Committee for the upcoming 2020 debates. Her campaign reports
contributions came from more than 200 people across 43 states.
There are 20 slots for the Democrat debates. Twenty-one Democrats have already launched campaigns.
