Sussex County, New Jersey passed a referendum allowing the Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders to use county resources for assisting federal immigration authorities, like ICE.

The referendum passed by a margin of nearly 2 to 1, with 22,081 for the measure and 10,982 against it.

The referendum goes in direct opposition to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s call for New Jersey to be a sanctuary state. Murphy’s Attorney General, Gurbir Grewal, had issued the Sanctuary State mandate in the spring of 2019, which barred local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE agents.

Three other New Jersey counties are fighting the Murphy administration in court over the sanctuary designation. They include Ocean, Monmouth, and Cape May counties.
