Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey just signed a new abortion ban into law.
The law makes it a felony for Alabama doctors to perform abortions except when the life of the mother is threatened.
The bill was approved by overwhelming majorities in both chambers of the Alabama legislature.
House Bill 314, “Human Life Protection Act”, bans all abortions in the state except when “abortion is necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk” to the woman.” Abortion is now a Class A felony, punishable by up to 99 years in prison for doctors. Attempted abortions are classified as Class C.
“Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act,” Ivey wrote in a statement Wednesday evening. “To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious & that every life is a sacred gift from God.”
Many Americans believe that Roe v. Wade was forced upon the public by the Supreme Court and is an issue that affects us all and should be voted upon by the people. Alabama, following another pro-life victory in Georgia, has done just that.
