In a 232-180 vote, the Democratic-controlled House approved a bill to give the go ahead for the District of Columbia to become the 51st state. Congress said they have a moral obligation and the constitutional authority to make sure that the city’s 700,000 residents are given full voting rights as citizens, who currently live under “taxation without representation.”
HOUSE PROPOSE DC STATEHOOD BILL
The bill was sponsored by D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) amid growing calls for racial equality since the George Floyd murder. Only one democrat, Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.), voted against the measure, while every Republican opposed it.
The vote is mostly symbolic, since Senate Republicans oppose the measure, citing a power grab for votes from the D.C. constituency. So it’s not likely to pass the Senate. President Trump has also vowed to veto the proposal if it does makes it the oval office.
